What's Important?

Important has a variety of different meaning to each person. The Webster dictionary definition of important is "marked by or indicative of significant worth or consequence" ("Important"). This basically means that a physical or abstract object is of high value to you. Many people have a certain object that is very important to them. This could mean that they would be in extreme emotional pain or that they would have trouble living without this certain object. I looked up important on another website. It was called thefreedictionary.com. On this website they gave me a very different definition of important that is very different than the first one. The first definition is "Strongly affecting the course of events or the nature of things; significant" ("Important-definition"). Important things affect other things in life like a chain of events. If one important thing happens it leads to another part of life that is either important or not important. Something is always more important than the last thing that has occurred. The last definition of important was,"Having or suggesting a consciousness of high position or authority; authoritative" ("Important-definition"). Someone who is important holds much authority in their presence or their job. An important person is higher in rank then other people because of their aura or how they carry themselves around people.

There are many things in this world that are important to most people. Love and trust are two of the most important abstract objects in life. To have love you need to have trust. You cannot love someone without trusting them fully. If you love someone blindly and do not know anything about that person, there is no trust. To some people grades are ultimately important. They might focus all their energy on getting really good grades either for sheer pleasure or for getting into an awesome college. This would be categorized as the first definition of important. Another example of important is being the CEO of a high powered company. The person in the highest command will serve as a very important figure in the business and how it portrays itself. The CEO most likely carries themselves in an important manner too. A manner such as "I hold the power and you have to listen to me." It is not necessarily a bad quality, but shows who is in charge. Next example of importance is honor. Honor means that you have "honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions" ("Honor"). Honor is an important quality to have in a person. People honor themselves or their actions by doing honorable things such as helping someone in need of food or helping an elderly lady cross the street. People respect honor in a person. One last very important thing is defending your country. Defending your country is also defending your honor. Defending your country is protecting yourself and everyone else that inhabits where you live. If no one defended their country, then it would fall to every other country that attacked and took over it.

In the Egyptian civilization, there was also many important things. This includes artifacts and actual people. One main important part of Egypt is its pyramids. Pyramids served a very important role in the Egyptian culture. They were used as burial tombs for the now dead pharaoh and his family. The pyramids were built by average villagers. The villagers brought large blocks of limestone over to the base of the pyramid on boats. The limestone blocks were pushed up the pyramid by the villagers on slaves. There were also architects there to make sure the blocks were in line. Also, there was a priest-astronomer to make sure the pyramid was lined up with the important constellations. The people who built the pyramids felt great pride in their work, so they drew on the walls to show there allegiance to the pharaoh. ("National") Pharaohs also played a very important role in Egyptian life. Pharaohs were the political and religious leaders of Egypt ("Pharaoh"). Pharaohs were also believed to unite with the god of the afterlife,Osiris, when they died ("Pharaoh"). Another important fact about pharaohs is that they formed a bridge between humans and Osiris. Ka was also another very important part of the Egyptian culture. Ka was a life force. The Egyptians believed that when you die your Ka was released from you and waited in the pharaohs pyramid. In the pyramid, the Ka looked at the decorations and ornaments that decorated the walls of the pyramid. Next, the Ka was called for judgement. Osiris weighed their heart against a feather. If the heart weighed more than the feather they could not go to the afterlife. If their heart weighed less then the feather, they were welcome into the afterlife. Because the Egyptians believed that the Ka could only stay alive if it had food and drink, the Egyptians offered food and drink to the body of the dead ("Egyptian"). This would keep the Ka happy. One last important part of the Egyptian life style is their hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics was their form of writing that used symbols instead of actual letters("Egyptian Hieroglyphics"). These symbols created a phonetic sound instead of creating a letter ("Egyptian Hieroglyphics"). They wrote their hieroglyphics on papyrus and on stone. Egyptians also wrote hieroglyphics on the walls of special places such as an important pharaohs pyramid. All of these were very important to the development of the Egyptian life and culture.

Important has a different connotation to many different people. It could mean something that is better than another item. Important could also mean that someone is higher in rank then you, but either way they are both important. Many people interpret important different ways and that is okay. Something important to a young child could be the blanket they were given has a baby, important to an adult could be paying the bills for their family. Either way, important is still something that means a lot to you or is high up on the chain of command.
