Power

Power is by definition "possession of control, authority, or influence over others" ("Power"). There can be a good type of power and a bad type of power. It just depends on how the person with the power uses it. It also depends on how the person with the power obtained the power. If the person with the power uses the power for bad he/she is going to be very disliked by the population. However, if they use the power for the good of everyone then everyone likes the person. Also, if a person only gets the power from killing the predecessor, then the person who now has the power could be hated. Unless, no one liked the predecessor. Power is all about who has it and what they do with the power.

Power has been corrupted over and over again in history. This is due to conspiracy's, battles, and death's. When people conspire to take down a leader the people in the city are affected and do not know what to do. Should they listen to their leader? Or to the people that dislike the leader? The population usually just follows what everyone else is doing even if it might not be the right thing to do. Power could also corrupt because of a leaders hunger for wealth and they just go after everything just so that they can obtain money off of it. Greed is another factor of a corrup power. Some rulers just feel the need to take and take and not think about any of the people that they are affecting with the choices that they make. If a ruler abuses the people he rules such as bossing them around to do something that they don't want, their power becomes corrupt. Sometimes, once people have the power they do not know how to use it, so they use it to the disadvantage of everyone else.

Power can be corrupted whether it be because the powerful person has a change of heart or other people convince him otherwise. Take Julius Caesar for example. He was very powerful and was high up in the senate ("Julius"). He was starting to change the Roman society ("Julius"). It started with one person to start a conspiracy agains Julius Caesar to take him down ("Julius"). Cassius started the conspiracy because he thought that Julius Caesar was becoming too powerful. Cassius convinced everyone, even Caesar's best friend, that Caesar needed to be killed ("Julius"). Cassius corrupted the power of Julius Caesar by having him assasinated ("Julius"). Hitler is another famous person who corrupted his power. By attacking an individual race and trying to kill them all in the Holocaust was going way to far with power ("Adolf"). The only reason he got as far as he did was because he scared everyone who was close to him so no one was able to confront him ("Adolf"). Adolf Hitler was a crazy man, who did not know when to stop with how far he took ability to use his power over people.

Power is distinguished by the user. If the user is an abuser, then the power is corrupt and no one wants that leader to be the leader anymore. There are many ways to corrupt power, so its the job of the leaders to learn these ways and not practice them or they will not be have the power for very long. People need to use the power that they have over other people for the good, not the bad. In history, there have been too many examples of corrupt power that could have changed history for the better. Power is in the hand of the beholder.

Desire for Conquest

I believe that Alexander wanted to conquer Persia just for the thrill of victory. There might have been a small chance that he wanted to avenge the wrongs, but overall it was for conquest. Alexander the Great was all about the fight. He conquered practically the whole known world and he did it mostly for himself and not for other people. There was nothing stopping him to conquer Persia and as long as he conquered it no one could really say anything about why he did it.

Leadership

Leadership is a natural thing that people have. Some people are born with it and some people can learn to obtain it. To be a leader you need to be good at what it is you are trying to be whether its an army like Alexander the Great or just a team. People could look up to you to help them because of your aura and how you carry yourself. Alexander was born great and had the power to lead others around him. There are leaders in the world and then there are followers.

Alexander the Great

480BC Defeated the Persians- Athenian league formed and built Parthenon, Arts, Theater-Age of Pericles
Spartans challenge Athens and go to war and battle on the planes of Attica-Hoplite warfare-Stalemate
Athenians built "The Long Wall"..built walls from harbor to city..no one can get to Athens. However, trapped in the walls and the Plague breaks out..Pericles dies because of it.
Spartans had allies and outposts in Sicily..Since Athens had an awesome Navy they invaded Sicily- "Sicilian expedition". Before ships left, someone vandalised the ships and convinced everyone it was Alcibiades, who thought of the idea. They had a trial without him there and convicted him. He fled to Sparta. Alcibiades probably told Sparta what was going to happen. When Athens got to Sicily there were forces waiting for them and Athenians were ambushed.

Alexander:
Lived in Macedonia..Taught by Aristotle. His Dad was the king of Macedon and was assassinated when Alex was 19. Alex became king. He avenges his fathers death and then proceeds to take over the world. He also tries to invade and conquer Persia..by the time he is around 24 he ruled most of the known world. No one really at Peria, but it is the symbolism that counts..has a few more battles along the way and comes to Gordian. The legend was that if anyone who could undo a crazy impossible knot would become the ruler of the world. He took out his sword and chopped it in half..and said "It doesn't matter how you undo the knot". When he gets to Egypt, and tells them he hates Persia, everyone loves him. He and his friends go on a road trip and get to an oasis called Siwa..there is an oracle and the oracle greets him as "The son of God" -- Amon(Zeus) He tries to get to Persepolis
The Battle of Issus: Alex puts his cavalry on the weak side and then went toward the middle. Called a Weak Side Attack.
Darius,Persian King, is left for dead and in his dying words left the kingdom to Alexander. Alex, went after the guy who left Darius for dead. He went after because he wants the population of Persia to like him. Alex follows Bethus into Afghanistan to the Hindu Kusch mountains. Alex goes the difficult path and ambush's Bethus and cuts his tongue, ears, and nose off.Bethus was sent off for impalation.
Alex comes down to India and as soon as he comes to the border he was being attacked daily..He gets hit with an arrow in the lung, but he survives. His army and him have a confrontation. He wants to go further, but his men do not want to go. He tells his army that they can go home. But they dont know where home is. He allowed them to marry Persians and he started dressing like the king. How did Persia change Alexander? He goes back up to Babylon. In Babylon, he loses a dear friend in an accident and becomes depressd. Through his binge drinking and all his wounds he becomes ill and dies. He didnt die in a blaze of glory or on the battle field. All the places he conquered were given to his generals. The whole empire was split up. The Seleucid part was the eastern empire. The other major empire was Egypt under the rule of Ptolemy.
The era is called the Hellenistic Age.

Socrates questioned people the opinions of the public people. He was never paid and also never gave an alternate teaching.

Plato was a student of Socrates. However, he taught through mathmatical learning to enhance abstract thinking.

Aristotle studied at Plato's school. Aristotle taught philosophy, logic, ethics, biology, physics, politics, psycology, and ethics.

The Past

Many people record the past to let other people know what happened. They also give the other people who read it information on how to do something or how not to do something. Yesterday is a huge factor on what I do today. Yesterday I might have woken up late to go to school and was very rushed. Well, today I would set my alarm for an earlier time. Yesterday is not viewed the same by everyone. Every person has a different yesterday then the next person. A friend might of had a bad day, but you might of had a really excellent day.
I teamed up with Sam, a friend of mine to take pictures. We chose to take pictures of a teddy bear. The pictures were pretty different. Most of my pictures were with the teddy bear laying down. Sam's pictures were with the teddy bear standing up. For a couple of my shots I had the teddy bear standing up, but I did not like the view.

History is Created by One

The definition of history is "Something that belongs to the past" ("History"). Everyone in the world has a history. This varies to the person and how they choose to live their life. Whatever happened before what happened now is categorized as in the past. That includes such things as what you ate for breakfast, what you did that day, and the thought that you just had in your head. History, as I have said in previous posts, is not just the material things and not just what a famous person has done. It is anything that you or me or that famous person has done. History is not limited to one person, but history is done by one person.

I believe that there is only one person that causes history to occur. There is only one person that makes an event happen. Such as, a mother brings home food, the family comes into the kitchen and sits down, they eat dinner. The mother made history happen by bringing home the food to make their dinner an event in the past. This goes back to the Hegal Theory that one event plus something else equals an effect. In this case it was the mother plus the food that equaled them eating dinner. Without the mother, then their dinner would not be in the past and it was only her making this history happened. The family was a part of the history, but they were not the initiators. She made it happen. Another example of a person causing history to occur is the war in Iraq. The war has been going on for a while, and it was Bush's ultimate call to send United States troops into Iraq and make it history of the War in Iraq. He made the decision to cause the to war happen, not the general of the army, although I'm sure he had a say, but it was not his over all decision. Bush's decision made the past appear how it is today. He made the decision to invade Iraq and now their are many deaths occurring. Another example, is the Persian War. King Darius, of Persia, made the decision to try and conquer Greece. He made it history because he caused it to happen. Again, his decision caused a cause and effect. He attacked Greece, who joined allies with other Greek forces, and then Persia ended up being defeated by the Greek and all of their allies. Since, Darius was king, he made the decision to obtain revenge on the Greeks.

There are many, many human individuals that have outstanding traits and when giving the right opportunity express their traits in extraordinary ways. Alexander the Great is an awesome example of this. Alexander the Great conquered most of the known world ("Alexander"). He conquered Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Bactria, and Persia ("Alexander"). He overthrew the ruler Darius III and conquered the whole Persian Empire ("Alexander"). His amazing military traits made his conquests be able to be victorius. If his army was not tired of all the fighting, then he could have conquered India and would have been able to reach his goal of the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea" ("Alexander"). Alexander the Great had made the decision to create history his way by conquering all the lands he had victored over. Jesus is also another great example of one person who made the past the way it was. He is the major figure of Christianity and when we think of Christianity, we normally think of Jesus ("Jesus"). He made the past how it is by influencing people to follow his christian actions. He was able to heal and help many people who needed his care. His four Gospels still have an effect on our lives and how we want to go about living them. The Gospels also help shape the way of our past. If we choose to follow the Gospels and live a Christian life our past will ultimatly reflect that and not be the same as if we were not following the four Gospels. Adolf Hitler was also a well known German ("Hitler"). He made achievements although they were not for the best. He still, however, made history that almost changed the whole known world. Hitler started World War II and it was his responsibilty of killing over 11 million Jewish people in the Holocaust ("Hitler"). No one else caused any of these two things. Hitler's advisors helped him, but they were not the ending cause of these horrific events. Since the Olympics are going on right now, here is the example Apolo Ohno. He is an American speed skater who just recently won his sixth medal in the Olympic games ("Apolp"). In 2001, he was the first American to win a World Cup title ("Apolo"). He was one person who made this history happen. No one else could win the World Cup title, but Apolo Ohno. Michael Jackson is also another well known person that has put his mark on history. Michael Jackson also known as "The King of Pop" was very famous for his top of the chart music ("Michael"). He was also known for his awesome dancing that included "the moonwalk" ("Michael"). No one else, but Michael Jackson could have been "The King of Pop". He made history by his incredible dance skills and outstanding music.

One person is all there needs to create history. One person to do something and make that happen in the past. One person to make a great achievement. One person to go about in their day. One person to do something and create a cause and effect that affects the other people around them. History does not need multiple people to create a history. Only one person. One person to make a difference. Everyone is a part of history, and history is a part of everyone.

Perisan Wars.

Darius: Arisagoras just asked us to go on an expedition to conquer Naxos. By doing this he started the Ionian Revolt. Aristagoras blamed his failure on us for some reason. He then all of a sudden decided to gang up on Perisa and burned down our capitol. I will have revenge on Athens and Eretia. We could not get out of stalemate until 495 B.C where we finally defeated them at the Battle of Lade. In 492, I decided to conquer Greece and avenge the city of Sardis. This first campaign did not end well so we sent out another one in 490 B.C. I let Datis in charge and he sailed across the Aegean Sea. They besieged Eretia, but while on route to Athens they were defeated at the Battle of Marathon.
Xeres I: My father died in 486 B.C, so I decided to finish his conquest. We managed to destroy most of the allied Spartans and Athens, but then searching for the remainder fleet we were defeated. The next year, Athens attacked us and defeated our army at the Battle of Plataea. The Greek invasion was over. However, the Greek decided to keep on attacking us. There was, although, peace in the end with the Treaty of Callias.

Athens A Democracy?

Yes, Athens was a democracy. It allowed the people to speak for what they wanted. Everyone was able to speak out for what they wanted. Even the poor had a say in the government. Athens was the most stable, the most long lived and most radical. The other cities in Greece were either monarchies or ogliarchies. Monarchies were where one person had sole power, but not by inheritance. Ogliarchies were where the power was with the richest people. Athens did have problems with its government, however. There were people that disliked democracy. Fourtuently, it was restored, but in 322 it was terminated by Phillip and Alexander the Great. Later, the Romans terminated the rest of the democracy in the other cities.

Olympic Games

Olympic games origionally started in 776 b.c. The games were to honor the god Zeus. Also, only men were allowed to compete. At first there was only one event, the stadion race. It was just a running race. Then came a there and back race and then a 12 lap race. Next came boxing and wrestling, the pancration, pentalathon, and the horse and chariot race. All of these events were to get men fit. ("BBC")

Now, we have very different set up of games. Ours are obviously more modernized. They also do not honor any gods and do not involve horse and chariots. The Olympics are still a competition to win, but are also for entertainment. Women are also allowed to compete freely in the games now unlike back then. The Olympics are a fun to watch and cheer on your favorite athletes.

All You Need Is Change

Change. Change is either liked or disliked. Change is either good or bad. Change is definitely needed in every one's life. You walk into your local Burger King and order a triple whopper with fries and a Coke, just like everyday.Does that not get boring or repetitive? Some people like change and some people are afraid of change. Change, however, is good. Everyone needs to mix it up every once in a while, whether that is changing what they eat at a fast food restaurant or getting a new haircut. Change affects us in many different ways. If you order the same type of food every single time you walk into your favorite fast food restaurant, you will not try any new food item that you might possibly enjoy much better than your normal food choice. Who knows? you might even find a new favorite. Let us say that there is a young teenage girl that is a little shy and does not have many friends. One day she decided that its time she tries to be more outgoing and not be shy. She starts her mission by getting a new and improved haircut. Walking into school the next day, she feels more confident and ready to make new friends. All this comes from a new haircut because it changed and inspired her to be someone different. Many people dislike change because they like their normal routine and it works for them. If they do not try new things, though, they might miss an opportunity to find new things that could improve their normal routine.

There are, at times, when change can be a bad thing. If a country was working perfectly fine with its democratic ruler, but then suddenly, the whole country is taken over and is ruled by a horrible dictatorship. This change would not be for the better of the country. The dictatorship could lead the entire country into ruins and kill millions of people. This sort of change is definitely bad.

Good change is not necessarily the material things like changing your hair. There can be the change of your personality or life style. Personalities are basically the soul of a person. If you have a bad personality then you might not be very popular since no one likes your personality. If suddenly someone has a change of heart and decides they need to change their personality because they are sick and tired of either being mean or being disliked. This change is obviously for the good. Sometimes people need to find a new life that they would enjoy better. Maybe they did not like they area they were living in or they did not like the weather, but whatever it was they needed a change that would be for the good of their living. They might just get up and hit the road, looking for a new city and a new life.

I asked a few John Carroll students their opinions on change. Leanne, a freshman, says, "Change is something that you can not really help from happening. Everything changes in one way or another and that is what shapes the world we live in." This is very true. Without change there would only repetition. We would be doing everything we normally do every day and there would be no liveliness in life.

Sam Clarke, also a fellow freshman, says, " Change is neither good nor bad, you can change it for the good or change it for the bad. It is an inevitable thing that can not be stopped, but it helps us evolve as human beings today." This is also a very true statement. Change happens whether you like it or not. This could be a change in the menu of your favorite restaurant or they do not make your favorite type of writing utensil anymore so you have to use another one.

Jake Wrzesien, a junior, says, "Personally I like change because it gives you the change to discover who you really are. " When you change you are being forced out of your element. If you want to change and become more artsy then you are trying new things that you are not used to. This could be different at first and maybe a little weird, but it is for the better.

Overtime history has experienced change. Our lives change every second as does technology and the weather. In the past you could be with the nice crowd at school, but in a second everything can change and you meet someone else that is not very good. They could be in with drugs and alcohol and pull you in a long with them. In the past you were a nice good person, but then your life could change and go in the wrong direction. This is an example of a bad sort of change. A good example of change is getting married. In the past you meet a wonderful male or female significant other and make the decision to take the next step. In the past, these to significant others were just friends and then boyfriend and girlfriend. They both equally decided to get married and experience a good change in both of their lives. Matrimony is a wonderful experience for both of the two people speaking the vowels.

As said before, change is good and bad. Many people think that change is a good thing and mostly it is. Everyone needs a little mixing up in their lives that makes their life not boring and monotonous. Change is also a real big part of history. It sometimes changes history for the good and the bad. The bad changes can be devastating or exciting. Either way, to live in this world you will experience all sorts of change. This change could be as little as writing in different colored ink or having a baby. As quoted in the song All Star by Smash Mouth, "We could all use a little change..."

What's Important?

Important has a variety of different meaning to each person. The Webster dictionary definition of important is "marked by or indicative of significant worth or consequence" ("Important"). This basically means that a physical or abstract object is of high value to you. Many people have a certain object that is very important to them. This could mean that they would be in extreme emotional pain or that they would have trouble living without this certain object. I looked up important on another website. It was called thefreedictionary.com. On this website they gave me a very different definition of important that is very different than the first one. The first definition is "Strongly affecting the course of events or the nature of things; significant" ("Important-definition"). Important things affect other things in life like a chain of events. If one important thing happens it leads to another part of life that is either important or not important. Something is always more important than the last thing that has occurred. The last definition of important was,"Having or suggesting a consciousness of high position or authority; authoritative" ("Important-definition"). Someone who is important holds much authority in their presence or their job. An important person is higher in rank then other people because of their aura or how they carry themselves around people.

There are many things in this world that are important to most people. Love and trust are two of the most important abstract objects in life. To have love you need to have trust. You cannot love someone without trusting them fully. If you love someone blindly and do not know anything about that person, there is no trust. To some people grades are ultimately important. They might focus all their energy on getting really good grades either for sheer pleasure or for getting into an awesome college. This would be categorized as the first definition of important. Another example of important is being the CEO of a high powered company. The person in the highest command will serve as a very important figure in the business and how it portrays itself. The CEO most likely carries themselves in an important manner too. A manner such as "I hold the power and you have to listen to me." It is not necessarily a bad quality, but shows who is in charge. Next example of importance is honor. Honor means that you have "honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions" ("Honor"). Honor is an important quality to have in a person. People honor themselves or their actions by doing honorable things such as helping someone in need of food or helping an elderly lady cross the street. People respect honor in a person. One last very important thing is defending your country. Defending your country is also defending your honor. Defending your country is protecting yourself and everyone else that inhabits where you live. If no one defended their country, then it would fall to every other country that attacked and took over it.

In the Egyptian civilization, there was also many important things. This includes artifacts and actual people. One main important part of Egypt is its pyramids. Pyramids served a very important role in the Egyptian culture. They were used as burial tombs for the now dead pharaoh and his family. The pyramids were built by average villagers. The villagers brought large blocks of limestone over to the base of the pyramid on boats. The limestone blocks were pushed up the pyramid by the villagers on slaves. There were also architects there to make sure the blocks were in line. Also, there was a priest-astronomer to make sure the pyramid was lined up with the important constellations. The people who built the pyramids felt great pride in their work, so they drew on the walls to show there allegiance to the pharaoh. ("National") Pharaohs also played a very important role in Egyptian life. Pharaohs were the political and religious leaders of Egypt ("Pharaoh"). Pharaohs were also believed to unite with the god of the afterlife,Osiris, when they died ("Pharaoh"). Another important fact about pharaohs is that they formed a bridge between humans and Osiris. Ka was also another very important part of the Egyptian culture. Ka was a life force. The Egyptians believed that when you die your Ka was released from you and waited in the pharaohs pyramid. In the pyramid, the Ka looked at the decorations and ornaments that decorated the walls of the pyramid. Next, the Ka was called for judgement. Osiris weighed their heart against a feather. If the heart weighed more than the feather they could not go to the afterlife. If their heart weighed less then the feather, they were welcome into the afterlife. Because the Egyptians believed that the Ka could only stay alive if it had food and drink, the Egyptians offered food and drink to the body of the dead ("Egyptian"). This would keep the Ka happy. One last important part of the Egyptian life style is their hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics was their form of writing that used symbols instead of actual letters("Egyptian Hieroglyphics"). These symbols created a phonetic sound instead of creating a letter ("Egyptian Hieroglyphics"). They wrote their hieroglyphics on papyrus and on stone. Egyptians also wrote hieroglyphics on the walls of special places such as an important pharaohs pyramid. All of these were very important to the development of the Egyptian life and culture.

Important has a different connotation to many different people. It could mean something that is better than another item. Important could also mean that someone is higher in rank then you, but either way they are both important. Many people interpret important different ways and that is okay. Something important to a young child could be the blanket they were given has a baby, important to an adult could be paying the bills for their family. Either way, important is still something that means a lot to you or is high up on the chain of command.

Exploration of Pyramids

When a Paraoh died he became Osiris which is King of the Dead and when there was a new pharaoh he was the King of the Heavens. This was how they believed the sun rose and set. His "Ka" also remained in his body and if it was not treated well then the cycle of the sun would be broken. When a pharaoh died, he was built a tomb. This was origionally carved in bedrock with a mound of dirt on it. Later, though, they were buried in pyramids which were built on benben which symbolized the rays of the sun. The pyramids were built by villagers. The people took pride in their work and wrote on the wall to show alliegience to the pharaoh. To build the Pyramid of Giza there was around 30,000 people. To build the pyramids they floated large blocks of limestone to the pyramid and pushed them up the ramps on the pyramid. Architects came to make sure the stones were positioned correctly. Priest-astronomers came also to find the pyramids site so it was in line with sacred constellations. ("National")

Pyramids were topped in limestone to reflect the light, because they thought pharoahs were the personification of God.
Pyramids of Gize--

War and Technology

I disagree. War is not a form of technology. However,we use technology to fight war. Technologies that we use in war include weapons, computers, and tracking devices. Guns are used to fight off the enemy that is threatening the society. Computers can be used to moniter the cameras that watch for the enemy approaching. Tracking devices can be used to track where the enemy is located and how far away they are. Another form of technology is a bomb. Bombs were used in World War II. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor because it was a main military base. They did not want the Americans to build their military and become more powerful then them. Technology had a very big impact on war.
